PLACES CLOSE TO OUR HEARTS

For our international guests, we’ve listed some of our favorite spots in New Zealand that we highly recommend. We hope you enjoy these places as much as we do!

Mount Mounganui

Mount Maunganui holds a special place in our hearts, not just because it’s where we live, but because it truly feels like home. We love the lifestyle here—the sound of waves crashing against the shore, the fresh scent of the salty sea breeze, and the endless stretches of golden sand. It welcomed us with open arms, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of our previous home in Auckland. We quickly found comfort in its natural beauty and relaxed vibe.

Our weekends are filled with simple joys like watching the sunrise from the top of the Mount, taking long walks along the beach, or soaking in the lively atmosphere of Mount Main. We love spending time fishing, surfing, and savoring delicious food at our favorite spots: Palace Burger for a laid-back bite, Tay Street Cafe for a coffee and walk on the beach, and Soul Boul for a refreshing, healthy treat. Mount Maunganui isn’t just where we live; it’s where we create memories and feel most at home. If you’re visiting before or after the wedding, we’d love to share this little slice of paradise with you and show you why it means so much to us!

Coromandel

Coromandel is our favorite spot for long weekends and holidays, offering the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. We love spending time in Matarangi with Bayley’s family and often head over to Mercury Island for fishing and diving.  Whangamata is also a favorite, with great surf and a vibrant town to explore. When it comes to camping, Jackson Point is our go-to, with fantastic views and beautiful beaches. Another must-visit is Hot Water Beach, where you can dig your own hot pool right in the sand. For a more relaxed day, we love packing a lunch and heading to New Chums Beach, one of the most beautiful and secluded spots in the area.

Taupo

We absolutely love spending our winters at Lake Taupo, especially with the ski fields of Mount Ruapehu being so close by. But honestly, Taupo is just as stunning in the summer. The crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming, all surrounded by beautiful mountain views and if you’ve never been before, make sure to check out Huka Falls, powerful waterfalls rushing through a narrow gorge. For the thrill-seekers, skydiving over Lake Taupo is a must. You’ll get breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. And after a day of adventure, nothing beats soaking in the geothermal hot pools. Our personal favorite spot is Wairakei Terraces. The mineral-rich waters are so relaxing, and it's the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Auckland

Auckland is where we first met and spent several years before we decided to leave the hustle and bustle behind. While we have fond memories of our time there, we now cherish the quieter pace of life we’ve found in Mount Maunganui. If you’re in Auckland and have some free time, one of Michaela’s favorite things to do is take the ferry to Waiheke Island. The ride from the CBD is always lovely, and once you’re there, you can explore the island’s wonderful wineries. We especially love Mudbrick, Man O' War and Goldie Estate!

Queenstown

Queenstown is another one of our favorite winter destinations, and honestly, it's a must-see no matter the season. For the Canadians, it’s a bit like a mini Banff, with breathtaking scenery, fantastic hikes, and plenty of fun activities. From thrilling adventures like bungee jumping and jet boating to great shopping, wineries and food, Queenstown has it all.

While you're in the area, don’t miss out on nearby Wanaka, known for its stunning views and iconic Wanaka Tree. Arrowtown, just a short drive from Queenstown, is a charming historic town with lovely shops and restaurants. Queenstown, Wanaka, and Arrowtown together make for an unforgettable experience, and always feels like home to Michaela!
